A Higher Salary. A Company in Trouble.

A friend offered him better pay. The reading asked a different question: what kind of company would he actually be joining?

By Guanxiang Academy10 Oct 2026~12 min read

A man had a job. A friend wanted him to leave it and join his company, with a higher salary as the reason to move. The question was simple. The comparison was not.

My friend is offering me a high salary to join his company. Should I leave my current job?

On one side stood the job he already knew. On the other stood an attractive number and someone he knew personally. A salary is paid by a working business, not by the warmth of an invitation. Before weighing the two jobs, he needed to know whether the second one existed on the terms being offered.

He cast Fire over Mountain, Wanderer (56), changing to Mountain over Wind, Work on the Decayed (18). A familiar person can invite you into unfamiliar ground. The relationship does not tell you how that ground will hold. The reading turns from the appeal of moving to the condition of the place receiving him.

What happened

He did not join. Another friend who had already joined the company later reported that the promised high salary had not been paid. Earlier wage arrears had also led to a large loss of staff. The company was already in serious trouble.

Those are the facts of what followed. They help us review the interpretation. The chart alone does not verify a company's payroll, and it does not establish anyone's intent.

Follow the pay. Then look beneath the job.

The chart is carried by Yin month, Xu day, and Chen hour. The year is not yet clear. The void is Shen and You. The moving lines are 2 and 4.

Read from the bottom upward. Self is Line 1; Response is Line 4. Only Lines 2 and 4 move. The Original and Changed columns describe the same cast, not two separate sets of active people.

  • The year is not identifiedThe year in the record is written in a form that does not name an Earthly Branch, so it stays unspecified. No Gregorian date, year stem, or time zone has been invented. Xu day with Shen-You void identifies Jia-Xu day in the Jia-Xu ten-day cycle. That day stem is what arranges the Six Spirits.
  • The lines, from the bottomThe casting values are 8, 6, 7, 9, 8, 7. Lines 2 and 4 change, and that change produces Work on the Decayed.
  • How the changed side is drawnThe board uses Guanxiang's Na Jia and Hex Board. Changed-side kinship labels keep the original Fire palace's reference element. A branch printed on a static row in the Changed column is not an extra moving line.

Three things have to stay separate: the pay being promised, the friend making the offer, and the job the company can actually sustain.

A friend's company is still someone else's ground

Wanderer describes a position away from an established base. You enter arrangements you did not build, depend on conditions you do not fully control, and have to discover how the place actually works. Fire above Mountain gives the image of a light passing over ground rather than settling securely into it.

For this question, the fit is immediate: leaving a known workplace to become a newcomer elsewhere. It does not mean changing jobs is inherently wrong. It means that being welcomed is not the same as being established. Friendship may make entry easier without making the company more stable.

Self at Line 1, Chen Earth, locates the man considering the move. Response at Line 4 is Wealth, You Metal, so the opposite position places the financial offer directly in view. Line 2's Brothers, Wu Fire, can represent the friend. For the job itself, the Focus is Officer, Hai Water, hidden at Line 3. These are different functions in the same situation, not interchangeable labels for one person.

The salary was present in the offer, not secure in practice

At Response, moving Wealth, You Metal, is in the stated Shen-You void. The very thing making the move attractive has an availability problem. There is a financial claim on the table, but it cannot simply be counted as dependable pay.

In this case, that is read as a salary promise with more in it than the company could deliver. The other employee's account gives the concrete meaning: the advertised high pay did not become the pay received. The number was not a sound basis for resigning.

There is an important qualification. Void alone does not prove a lie, and it does not mean that no money exists. Xu Earth on the day supports You Metal. The moving line also changes to Xu Earth, which supports Metal in return. Those supports cannot be ignored, and the offer cannot be labeled "True Void" simply because the outcome was disappointing.

The distinction is between having some backing and being able to fulfill this commitment. Support can coexist with a promise that remains unavailable or overstated. Here, the wider reading and the reported payroll problems are what make the warning specific. It is not a rule that every void salary line means fraud.

The same changed Xu clashes with Self, Chen. At the level of the offer's development, the condition reached on the employer's side does not settle comfortably around the man's existing position. Accepting would put his own footing at stake. This is more than a harmless extra possibility alongside his current job.

Keep both relationships in view. Xu gives returning support to the original Wealth line, yet stands in clash with Chen Self. We are tracing how the moving offer develops in relation to him, not turning every row in the Changed column into an independent actor. An offer can look supported from the other side while its terms are disruptive for the person expected to rely on it.

This does not force a resignation, and it does not predict that he must lose his job. He kept the choice, and he chose not to go.

The friend had his own problems to answer to

At Line 2, Brothers, Wu Fire, moves and changes to Officer, Hai Water. Water controls Fire. This is returning control, where a factor's own development puts pressure back upon it.

Brothers is the peer or friend role in this question. Wu Fire receives support from the Yin Wood month, so the invitation is not simply inert. The friend can be active, persuasive, and involved. The change reveals a limit to that activity: his own circumstances are pressing back on his ability to carry the arrangement through. Returning control describes that direction of pressure. It does not erase the supported Fire line, and it does not mean the friend can do nothing at all.

Read against what was later reported, the friend was recruiting from inside a troubled company, not offering a clean opportunity from outside its problems. Wage arrears and departing staff were already part of what he had to deal with. The promise made to the man considering the move could not be separated from those obligations.

It is unnecessary to invent a motive. The case does not establish whether the friend knowingly misled him, overestimated what could be paid, or hoped a new hire would help repair the business. Whatever his intention, his capacity to deliver was the relevant issue. Knowing the person did not remove the need to understand the company.

The invitation came from a friend. The salary still had to come from the company.

The role depended on a damaged supporting structure

The Officer Focus for the job is Hai Water, hidden beneath Shen Metal at Line 3. Hidden does not mean nonexistent. It means the factor is present without being fully visible on the surface of the question. Here, the invitation is visible. The actual condition of the work behind it needs to be uncovered.

  • Visible, the Flying lineWealth, Shen Metal: month-broken by Yin, and also in the Shen-You void.
  • The link between themMetal supports Water, if that support can operate.
  • Hidden, the job FocusOfficer, Hai Water: the employment role beneath the offer.
  • What the link can carryThe support relationship exists. The condition of the source determines whether the job can rely on it.

Normally, Metal supports Water. The Flying Wealth line could therefore provide a basis for the Hidden job. But Yin month clashes with Shen, making it month-broken, and Shen is also void. The layer that should sustain the role is compromised in two ways.

This is where the reading becomes more useful than "the salary looks uncertain." It asks whether there is a functioning structure underneath the vacancy: resources, continuity, and the ability to maintain employment. The later account of unpaid wages and staff leaving gives a concrete counterpart to that damaged support.

The Hidden Hai is not itself in the stated void, so we should not claim there was no job at all. Nor does a broken Flying line automatically destroy everything beneath it. A weakened cover can make something hidden easier to reveal. Being revealed, however, is not the same as being supported. Finding out what the job really involves would not, by itself, repair the company that has to sustain it.

The hidden line, the clash, and the decision window

The Hidden Hai Water also has its own conditions. Xu Earth on the day controls Water. Yin Wood in the month receives Water's support and also combines with Hai. That connection is not an automatic release, and it is not a guarantee of strength. These same month and day constraints matter for the changed Hai at Line 2. The returning-control relationship is present, but its force must still be assessed. Neither a factor's appearance nor its connection to the month cancels the question of whether it can function.

Self, Chen, is already clashed by Xu day. With Yin Wood month controlling Earth, that clash should not automatically be called vigorous Hidden Movement. Activation and disruption are different possibilities, and capacity decides which reading is justified. Chen hour repeats Self's branch. It does not erase the month and day conditions.

The practical window is equally important. He is deciding whether to resign now. A company that might recover at some later point is not the same offer as a company that can pay the promised salary when he joins. Leaving void, or moving beyond a broken month, would not on its own prove that wage arrears had been cleared. No recovery date can responsibly be taken from this record alone.

The Guanxiang guide wears goggles while repairing a corroded mechanism, with the small bird helping nearby.
Work on the Decayed begins with damage that has accumulated. The task is to understand and repair its causes.

Gu describes what needed repair, not a disaster he would cause

Work on the Decayed, or Gu, concerns problems that have been allowed to develop: neglected responsibilities, arrangements that no longer hold, and damage that cannot be solved by keeping up appearances. It calls for work on the causes, not another reassuring description of the surface.

In what actually happened, this meaning is concrete. Wages were already overdue. Employees had already left. The company's problems predated the invitation. The change from Wanderer to Gu reads as entering a place where accumulated trouble would become part of the newcomer's working reality.

It does not mean his arrival would make the company deteriorate. And Gu does not mean repair is impossible. A turnaround role can be a real opportunity when the problems are disclosed, the resources exist, and the person joining understands what they are taking on. None of that can be substituted with a large salary promise.

The clues converge without saying the same thing.

  • The pay could not be relied onVoid Wealth at Response puts the financial promise under scrutiny. The reported failure to pay the promised amount explains the concern.
  • The friend was not free of the company's pressureHis moving Brothers line meets returning control. Recruiting someone does not remove the problems limiting what he can deliver.
  • The job rested on compromised supportA Hidden Officer beneath month-broken, void Wealth directs attention to the condition of the business, not just the appeal of the position.

Before that account arrived, these would have been reasons to check payment history, ask why staff were leaving, and establish what resources actually supported the role. After it arrived, they form a coherent account of the situation he chose not to enter. The facts, rather than the hexagram's name alone, make the difference.

He needed to know what was already happening

At first, the decision could look like a struggle between security and courage. Stay with the familiar, or trust a friend and take the better-paid opportunity? Framed that way, hesitation easily becomes a judgment on the person hesitating: perhaps he is too cautious, too doubtful, or afraid of change.

That framing leaves out the decisive information. He was comparing his actual current job with an imagined new job in which the promised salary was reliably paid. Once the company's existing condition entered the comparison, the second option changed. It was no longer simply the same work for more money. It included wage uncertainty, lost staff, and accumulated problems.

This is what it means to say the I Ching, and Six Lines in particular, takes the present apart. The lines separate factors that an attractive story bundles together: the friend, the pay, the job, the supporting resources, and the effect on the person deciding. Hidden factors and restricted participation ask us to inspect what the story has left out. The missing piece was not a forecast. It was the company behind the offer.

Much of the friction around a decision comes from trying to settle it before the situation is understood. The same incomplete picture gets turned over and over, as if more thought would supply the missing facts. Often it will not. A clearer present changes the options themselves, and the next decision has firmer ground.

See the present more clearly, and the next decision has firmer ground. The choice remains yours.

How a case like this should be read

This is a retrospective reading of an anonymous case. The known facts are the invitation, the cast, the decision not to join, and another employee's report of unfulfilled salary promises, earlier wage arrears, and substantial staff departures. No salary figure, private conversation, recovery timeline, or intention has been invented.

A chart organizes an inquiry. It is not independent evidence of a company's finances. The same void, hidden line, or returning-control pattern may mean something different in another question. Read the role, the conditions, and the interactions together, then check the picture against reality. Understand the situation you are entering. The decision remains yours.
