Relationships
He Liked Her. He Wasn't Available.
A Six Lines case: real attraction, an undisclosed partner, and a relationship that was never only about two people.

A woman asked whether a man pursuing her would be a suitable partner. The easy question was whether he liked her. The useful question was what, exactly, she would be entering if she said yes.
Those questions can have very different answers. Attraction describes a feeling between people. Suitability includes everything that feeling has to live alongside: existing commitments, honesty, everyday arrangements, and whether the relationship on offer is the same one both people think they are beginning.
Is this man a suitable partner for me?
The cast was Lake over Mountain, Influence (31), changing to Wind over Fire, Family (37). Influence describes the pull between people. It does not tell us who else is already part of their lives. We start with the atmosphere of the figure, then look beneath the man's line and follow the moving relationships around it.
What was later confirmed
The man already had a partner and was living with her. He had also maintained romantic relationships with several other women over a long period.
Those are the facts of the case. The reading below explains how its clues were interpreted. A hexagram is not treated as independent proof of another person's conduct.
The feeling is visible. The arrangement is not.
The chart is carried by its branches: You year, Chou month, Yin day, Shen hour. The void is Xu and Hai. The moving lines are 1, 4, and 6.
Read from the bottom upward. Self is Line 3; Response is Line 6. Lines 1, 4, and 6 change. Gold lines and the ○ / × marks identify the actual moving rows.

- No civil date was recordedNo Gregorian date or time zone came with the chart, so none has been invented. Yin day with Xu and Hai void identifies Bing-Yin day in the Jia-Zi ten-day cycle. The Six Spirits are arranged from that day stem. The year and month stems are not recorded.
- The lines, from the bottomThe line values, from bottom to top, are 6, 8, 7, 9, 7, 6. Changing only Lines 4 and 6 would not produce Family. Line 1 must change as well.
- How the changed side is drawnThe board uses Guanxiang's Na Jia and Hex Board. Changed-side kinship labels keep the original Lake palace's Metal as their reference. The full Changed column is there for comparison. A printed branch on a static row is not an additional moving actor.
The order of the reading is simple. Begin with the whole scene. Locate the people. Look for what is hidden. Follow the interactions. Return to the actual question.
The attraction was not the problem
Influence, or Xian, describes responsiveness: something in one person reaches another and receives a response. Lake above Mountain gives the scene both an opening toward contact and something held within. In this case, the reading accepts that the man genuinely felt drawn to her. His pursuit was not simply empty theatre.
That is precisely why stopping at the hexagram's name would be misleading. "He is attracted to you" does not answer "Is he suitable for you?" The pull can be real while the circumstances make an honest relationship impossible. We have to see what supports his present life, not just what he directs toward hers.
For this woman's question about a male suitor, we take the Officer line at Line 2, Wu Fire, as the Focus. "Officer" is the board's traditional role label, not a claim about his profession or character. Self at Line 3, Shen Metal, locates the woman who asked. Response at Line 6 describes the opposite position. It does not replace the specific Focus selected for the man.
There was already someone at home
Look beneath the Officer line. There is Hidden Wealth, Mao Wood, at Line 2. In this relationship question, the traditional Wife and Wealth role is read as a female partner connected to the man. It is a contextual role assignment, not a statement that women are possessions, and it is not how every Wealth line should be read.
Hidden means the factor is in the situation without appearing on its visible surface. The woman asking the question could see the man's attention. What she could not see was the relationship already underneath his apparent availability.
- Visible, the Flying lineOfficer, Wu Fire: the man pursuing her.
- The link between themHidden Wood supports visible Fire. The concealed relationship helps sustain the life from which he presents himself to someone new.
- Not disclosed, the Hidden lineWealth, Mao Wood: the existing partner beneath his visible role.
- The shared positionBoth occupy Line 2, the home position in the positional reading used for this case.
The position makes the clue more specific. Line 2 is read here as the dwelling or home position. A partner hidden beneath the man at that position points the investigation toward an existing domestic relationship, not merely a passing flirtation elsewhere. In this case, that reading corresponds to the partner with whom he was already living.
The direction of support matters too. Mao Wood supports Wu Fire, so the Hidden line supports the Flying line. The concealed relationship is not simply an unrelated secret. The chart does not tell us whether that support was financial, emotional, or practical, so those details are not invented.
Nor is the hidden partner an empty placeholder. Mao is not in the stated void, and Yin Wood on the day gives it same-element support. Concealment and absence are different things. There is something to uncover, rather than a vacant place waiting for the woman who asked to fill.
She was being invited into a relationship without being shown the relationships already inside it.
The pattern did not stop with one hidden partner
Now follow Lines 4 and 6. Line 4 is moving Hai Water. Line 6 is moving Wei Earth and changes to Mao Wood. Together, these supply Hai, Mao, and Wei: the Threefold Wood combination, with Mao as its central branch.
- Line 4, originalHai: moving Water.
- Line 6, changedMao: the central Wood.
- Line 6, originalWei: moving Earth.
Why call this a Wealth formation? Influence belongs to the Lake palace, whose reference element is Metal. Metal controls Wood, making Wood the Wealth role on this board. The combination therefore gathers the reading around the same relationship role that was hidden beneath the man.
In the case, this is Wealth becoming a group: romantic involvement is spread across a wider arrangement, rather than confined to the woman asking and the man pursuing her. The hidden domestic partner and this broader configuration are different clues. One points to an existing relationship at home. The other points to more than a single, exclusive romantic attachment.
This does not mean that three branches equal three women. A formation describes a pattern of involvement, not a headcount. Nor does it tell us how many years the pattern has continued. The known outcome confirms multiple women and a long-running pattern. Those details remain known facts. They are not numerical predictions extracted from the chart.
Line 1 also changes, from Chen Earth to Mao Wood. It adds another moving route toward the Wealth role, but each appearance of Mao is not counted as a separate woman. The important point is the repeated direction of the changes, not how many identical labels can be circled.
The awkward details belong in the reading too
It would be convenient to stop at a neat Threefold formation. The method requires another pass: do its members have the capacity and participation needed to turn that pattern into an operative force?
- Hai is voidLine 4's Hai Water lies in the Xu-Hai void. Its movement matters, but movement alone does not remove every restriction. Yin day also combines with Hai. What that contact actually permits has to be examined. "It combines, therefore it is fully available" is not enough.
- Wei is month-brokenThe Chou month clashes with Wei at Line 6. The same restriction also concerns the Wei reached by Line 4's change. The configuration is present, but its members are not all freely operating under easy conditions.
- The center has a basisMao Wood is not void and receives same-element support from Yin day. This gives the center more substance than an empty symbol. It does not, by itself, cancel the restrictions on the other members.
So the precise claim is this. The case contains a recognizable Threefold Wealth configuration, read here as plural romantic involvement. It is not an unrestricted, automatically powerful Wood force. Reading its relationship meaning and judging its immediate power are two connected but different tasks.
That distinction preserves the useful insight without pretending the chart is tidier than it is. A crowded relationship pattern can be examined while some parts remain concealed, constrained, or unable to operate normally at the moment of the cast.
Returning control, and the woman's own position
All three moving rows receive returning control from their own changes. Chen Earth changes to Mao Wood at Line 1. Hai Water changes to Wei Earth at Line 4. Wei Earth changes to Mao Wood at Line 6. Wood controls Earth, and Earth controls Water. The directions of change therefore contain pressure back upon their starting conditions, rather than straightforward support for them. Capacity and restrictions still govern how much of that pressure can operate.
Self is Shen Metal at Line 3, a static line clashed by Yin day. With Earth-month support, it warrants a Hidden Movement reading rather than the shortcut "day-clashed, therefore useless." It draws attention to the woman's own position being stirred into response. It is not evidence that she caused his behavior.
The hour also repeats Shen, while the year supplies You Metal. These belong to the recorded context, but they are not used to override the month and day audit, or to turn one branch into a complete personality judgment. Neither the kinship labels nor the Six Spirits, taken alone, establish deception.

Family does not mean you will marry him
The change from Influence to Family is easy to romanticize: attraction now, a home together later. A changed hexagram is not a ready-made ending. Its meaning has to be read through the people and relationships actually present on the board.
Here, the hidden partner occupies the home position beneath the man. Family therefore makes his existing domestic arrangement a central part of understanding what this attraction leads into. It asks us to see the household that was already there, not to award the woman an imagined place in a future one.
The scene moves from what two people feel between them to the wider set of relationships those feelings enter. That is why the hidden line and the collective Wealth pattern matter more than a reassuring story built from two attractive hexagram names.
The answer changes when the whole scene is visible
The useful conclusion is not that the attraction was fake. It is that attraction was only a small part of the offer. The woman was considering a man whose existing partnership had not been disclosed and whose romantic involvement extended beyond it.
For someone seeking an honest, exclusive relationship, this was not a suitable arrangement. The problem was not the mere existence of other people. It was the lack of truthful disclosure and a shared understanding of what everyone was consenting to.
Before the facts were known, this reading would have directed the next conversation toward concrete questions. Are you currently in a relationship? Do you live with a partner? Are you dating anyone else? What does exclusivity mean to you? A chart can organize those questions. The answers, and the person's conduct, must establish the facts.
Once those facts were confirmed, there was no need to keep asking whether he felt something. He could feel something and still be offering a relationship she would not have chosen with the full picture in front of her.
Being wanted is not the same as being offered an honest relationship.
The value of the reading, at this point in the case, is knowing which question to ask next.
How a case like this should be read
This is a retrospective reading of an anonymous case. Its facts are limited to the question, the cast, the undisclosed partner he was living with, and the long-running involvement with multiple women. No dialogue, discovery scene, or personal history has been added.
The same hidden line or combination in another question need not mean infidelity. Role, position, strength, participation, and the actual circumstances must be read together. Use the reading to investigate what is missing from the picture, not to accuse someone on symbols alone. Read the individual through the relationships around them.
Why the present is the thing to take apart
The I Ching, and Six Lines in particular, is used here to take the present apart. It is not used to hand someone a future they are required to obey. The useful question was never "Will he love me later?" It was "What is already true in this moment, and what would I be walking into?"
Six Lines gives the present more than one seat. The feeling has a place. The person has a place. The household already formed beneath him has a place. The wider pattern of involvement has a place, and so do the limits on how freely that pattern can operate. Once those are separate, the scene is no longer one blur of attraction.
When the present is clear, the decision becomes easier. She does not have to argue with the feeling or talk herself out of it. She can see that the attraction was real, and still see the arrangement she was not being shown. Clarity does not make the choice for her. It shows what the choice actually is.
A clear present makes the next choice easier. The choice remains in your hands.
A reading can organize the moment. It cannot live the relationship, and it is not a verdict. The decision stays with the person who asked—and, in any reading, with you.
