01

Basic

Meaning, weather, and the five checks. Enough to recognize the hex.

What it means

Lu represents the psychology of the wanderer, the expat, and the outsider: navigating unfamiliar territory through humble adaptability, light baggage, and flawless etiquette.

The core dynamic is Fire burning across the surface of Mountain. Fire travels rapidly across dry mountain brush, lingering only as long as fuel remains before moving on; it never sets permanent roots in the rock. The foundational wisdom instructs leaders to be clear and enlightened in applying legal penalties, handling justice swiftly without allowing disputes to drag on indefinitely.

The major opportunity is nimble freedom and worldly mastery—learning foreign systems rapidly, adapting to any culture or industry, and building high-mobility assets that are immune to local collapse. The fatal risk is arrogant entitlement and reckless carelessness: treating foreign territory like your personal playground, burning your own shelter down through carelessness, and getting stranded without allies.

The mandate is respectful mobility. Travel light. Honor local customs, keep your core wealth private, secure temporary lodging, and move on before the fire burns down to the rock.

The Vibe

Living out of a suitcase on unfamiliar terrain.

The atmosphere is quiet, watchful, and detached, like stepping into a foreign airport late at night where you do not speak the local language. You have no permanent roots here, no home-court advantage, and zero room for casual arrogance. Survival depends entirely on situational awareness, polite manners, and keeping your passport close to your chest. A space where you are a guest passing through; traveling light, observing customs, and leaving before you overstay your welcome is the only way to stay safe.

Cheat Code

Crush
A dynamic between two travelers or navigating a relationship with an expiration date (such as long distance or temporary relocation). Enjoy the present connection with deep grace, but avoid demanding permanent domestic promises while life logistics are in transit.
Bag
Operating as an external consultant, freelance specialist, or new hire in an established corporate culture. You are on borrowed ground. Speak with polite deference, do not lecture veteran staff on their traditions, and deliver your project cleanly without getting involved in office politics.
Cash
High mobility, international revenue, and maintaining liquid emergency reserves. Keep your wealth portable and diversified across multiple currencies or banks. Avoid locking capital into illiquid local real estate in markets you do not fully understand.
Glow
Travel fatigue, jet lag, and somatic rootlessness. Your nervous system needs consistent anchors while your location changes. Practice daily grounding routines: unpack your suitcase immediately, drink mineral water, and maintain consistent morning stretches.
Squad
You are meeting people on the road, at international conferences, or in temporary circles. Be courteous, tip generously, and exchange contacts, but rely only on your lifelong core circle for real emergencies.

Deep breakdown

Why this pattern behaves as it does — then inner, outer, and keys.

What the pattern is

Lu is composed of Mountain below and Fire above. Mountain represents immovable stillness, stone, and the solid local earth. Fire represents restless heat, travel, light, and moving flames.

Picture a traveler lighting a small campfire on the rocky slope of a steep mountain at midnight. The mountain does not own the fire; the fire does not own the mountain. The flame burns through dried twigs, gives the traveler warmth for six hours, illuminates the immediate campsite, and burns out by dawn as the traveler packs their bag and walks down the trail.

This is why Lu represents the traveler: the alert posture, light sleep, and careful observation that arise when familiar support is absent and the ground belongs to someone else. Moving fire rests briefly on solid terrain, giving light and warmth without taking root. On borrowed ground, distance can loosen old assumptions, mobility can preserve options, and close attention can make an unfamiliar system readable. The arrangement breaks when freedom turns into entitlement: a guest mistakes access for ownership, ignores local limits, or damages the shelter that makes passage possible. Lu keeps a nimble, provisional rhythm of arrivals, short stays, and timely departures. Its strength lies in respectful movement rather than settlement—carrying only what can be protected, reading each place quickly, and leaving before comfort erases awareness of the temporary terms.

Inner and outer

Inner

A little unrooted, a little cautious, a little curious. No permanent place to rest, no built-in status or power to lean on, so there is a quiet carefulness to every interaction. A little homesick sometimes, but also open to new things and new people met on the road. Grateful for small kindnesses, and careful not to overstay welcomes or overstep bounds.

Outer

You are in unfamiliar territory, where you do not know the rules or the people. People will be kind to you if you are polite and humble, but will turn on you if you act entitled or loud as a guest. Stability is temporary, small comforts are to be appreciated, and trouble comes fast to strangers who act like they own the place.

Keys

  • Wandering OutsiderYou are not from here. You do not know the unwritten rules, you do not have built-in friends or status, and you are just passing through. People see you as a stranger first.
  • Guest StatusYou are a guest in this place, not the owner. You do not get to make the rules, you do not get to demand special treatment, and you have to respect the place and people that are hosting you.
  • Humility in Strange PlacesArrogance and entitlement as a stranger get you kicked out fast. Humility, politeness, and respect get you fed, sheltered, and helped.
  • Movement Without RootsYou are not settled, not permanent. You are moving through, so do not put down roots too deep in temporary stops, and do not get attached to things that are not yours.
  • Small Comforts on the RoadTravel is hard, so small kindnesses, a warm bed, a good meal, a friendly stranger are to be appreciated deeply. Do not expect luxury; appreciate the small good things.
  • Caution and CourtesyYou have to be careful as a stranger. Watch, listen, learn the rules before you act, and be courteous to everyone. One wrong move can leave you with nowhere to stay.

The text

The case log, then the six lines. Open a line when you need it.

The case

King Wen’s record of Lu approaches the vulnerability of the traveler with cold behavioral realism. The opening Judgment states that for a traveler, success is modest and favorable only when holding steadfast to strict, polite boundaries.

The line statements trace the perilous mistakes and triumphs of the road: acting petty, stingy, and disruptive at an inn (inviting instant disaster), securing a safe resting place, keeping traveling funds close, and gaining a loyal servant (steadfast success), burning down your own lodging through carelessness and losing your servant (perilous ruin), finding temporary shelter and securing tools while the heart remains deeply uneasy, shooting a pheasant and losing an arrow only to win ultimate acclaim from the local ruler, and finally the horrific climax of arrogance: a bird burning its own nest, the traveler laughing loudly at first only to wail in terror later, losing the ox through careless negligence in a foreign market with total misfortune. The insight is ultimate: on the road, never get cocky; the moment you treat a foreign inn like your personal playground, you burn your own roof.

Six lines

BottomOffspringThe traveler fusses over trifles. This is how the trouble is drawn in.
When moving

Acting petty, stingy, and disruptive in a strange place; drawing negative attention through low-class complaints.

Catalysts

A traveler obsessing over petty trifles at an inn—drawing contempt from locals and bringing disaster upon themselves.

Counsel

Stop complaining about small things. You are a guest in this company or country; pay the bill, do not haggle over pennies, and be polite.

Take

Represents petty complaints, bad travel reviews, complaining about local food, or arguing with service workers.

In travel, making a scene over a $2 hotel surcharge and ruining your evening. In career, an expat employee loudly mocking the host country's corporate etiquette.

SecondBrothersThe traveler reaches a lodging, keeps the means close, and gains a young servant who holds firm.
When moving

Finding a clean, dependable base of operations; securing your travel funds and gaining loyal local help.

Catalysts

A traveler arriving safely at an established inn, keeping funds securely in the pocket, and winning the loyalty of a faithful servant.

Counsel

Secure your logistics. Find a safe apartment, lock your passport in the safe, and treat local helpers with respect.

Take

Represents trusted local fixers, dependable translators, loyal junior assistants, or reliable travel buddies.

In career, hiring a brilliant local operations manager who navigates foreign regulations flawlessly. In personal life, finding a dependable travel partner who watches your bags.

ThirdWealthThe traveler's lodging burns. One loses the young servant. Holding firm is dangerous.
When moving

Carelessness and arrogant entitlement destroying your temporary safety; burning down your own accommodation.

Catalysts

The traveler's inn burns to the ground through carelessness, and the loyal servant flees—total loss of safety and persistent danger.

Counsel

Stop acting reckless. You are alienating your hosts through bad habits; check your temper and stop treating temporary perks like permanent rights.

Take

Represents lost luggage, damaged rental cars, burned cash reserves, or losing money to untrustworthy contractors.

Carelessness on the road brings instant losses. In wealth, leaving your laptop bag in a foreign taxi and losing months of unbacked work. In career, treating a local landlord with disrespect and getting evicted.

FourthWealthThe traveler finds a place, and gains an axe for the road. My heart is not at ease.
When moving

Holding temporary lodging and protective tools in an unfamiliar city, yet feeling deeply uneasy and spiritually homeless.

Catalysts

Resting in a temporary shelter with essential traveling tools—possessing security, yet the heart remains deeply unsettled.

Counsel

Accept the spiritual unease. You have money and shelter, but this place is not home; do your consulting work and do not try to put down permanent roots.

Take

Represents emergency survival funds, portable laptop setups, consulting per-diems, or foreign currency cards.

You have enough to get by, but no home comfort. In career, earning strong daily consulting fees in a foreign city while living out of an impersonal corporate apartment. Enjoy the income, but acknowledge the isolation.

FifthOffspringShooting a pheasant. One arrow is lost. In the end, praise and a charge.
When moving

Demonstrating exceptional skill on a foreign stage; spending one arrow to take down the prize and winning royal acclaim.

Catalysts

Shooting a wild pheasant and losing a single arrow—winning widespread praise and receiving official titles from the ruler.

Counsel

Deliver your master skill. You are an outsider; perform with such precision that the local leadership rewards you with high status and honors.

Take

Represents master-level keynote speaking, landing prestigious international contracts, or brilliant strategic advisory.

External mastery wins the room. In career, an outside consultant delivering a masterclass that causes the foreign CEO to offer an executive retainership. In personal life, winning the deep respect of your in-laws through charm.

TopBrothersA bird burns its nest. The traveler laughs first and wails afterward. The ox is lost at the border. Misfortune.
When moving

Extreme arrogant vanity resulting in total catastrophic loss; laughing loudly at the start, only to weep bitterly as everything is destroyed.

Catalysts

A bird burns its own nest; the traveler laughs loudly at first, then wails in terror as their ox is lost through carelessness in a foreign market.

Counsel

Drop the arrogant swagger. You thought you conquered this town; your careless boasting is about to cost you your entire net worth.

Take

Represents arrogant expat cliques, predatory foreign associates, losing legal standing, or total business failure.

Hubris destroys the traveler. In career, an arrogant foreign executive getting deported after violating local laws. In personal wealth, losing a luxury property abroad because you failed to hire a local real estate lawyer.
