01

Basic

Meaning, weather, and the five checks. Enough to recognize the hex.

What it means

Kun represents confinement, exhaustion, and the crucible of limitation: the severe testing phase where external resources, speech, and exits are blocked, forcing you to prove your character through internal endurance alone.

The core dynamic is Lake above Water. The water has leaked out from beneath the lake basin, leaving the surface parched and empty. The foundational wisdom instructs dedicating your life to your true purpose and fulfilling your calling, proving that genuine integrity shines brightest when stripped of all worldly comfort.

The major opportunity is the ultimate forging of inner authority—discovering that you can survive total material and social drought without breaking your core spine. The fatal risk is bitter despair and meaningless verbal flailing: crying out in self-pity, pleading with bad faith actors who do not believe you, and sabotaging your dignity out of panic.

The mandate is silent endurance. Stop explaining yourself. Words are useless in Kun; conserve your energy, accept the confinement, and hold your inner fire until the season turns.

The Vibe

Dry, exhausted, and completely stripped of spare room.

The water has drained entirely out of the lakebed, leaving cracked mud and exposed stone under a merciless sky. The resources you used to rely on are temporarily cut off, your words carry zero weight, and every attempt to explain yourself sounds hollow or falls on deaf ears. There is a heavy, claustrophobic pressure: you are trapped within rigid limits and standard solutions fail. A testing chamber where struggling only burns oxygen, and where enduring in silence is the only way character survives.

Cheat Code

Crush
Severe emotional drought and feeling completely unheard. Words trigger defensiveness, and both parties feel drained. Stop arguing or demanding immediate validation; pull back the emotional pressure and let silence cool the room.
Bag
Severe career constraints, budget freezes, or having your proposals completely blocked by leadership. Your explanations carry zero weight right now. Stop pitching; do your basic duties quietly and conserve your energy until the management storm passes.
Cash
Severe liquidity drought and cashflow squeeze. Revenue channels are temporarily blocked and accounts are tight. Stop chasing speculative quick fixes; execute radical personal austerity, cut living expenses to survival levels, and ride out the dry spell.
Glow
Deep physiological depletion, dry throat, and mental exhaustion. You are running on empty. Strip away all unnecessary demands; drink pure water, sleep in complete darkness, and rest your voice and eyes completely.
Squad
Feeling alienated and isolated within your circle. Nobody seems to understand your struggle, and explaining it makes it worse. Step back from social obligations; true resilience is built in quiet solitude.

Deep breakdown

Why this pattern behaves as it does — then inner, outer, and keys.

What the pattern is

Kun is composed of Water below and Lake above. Lake represents water collected in a basin; Water represents downward draining, depth, and danger.

Picture a large natural reservoir on a high plateau. A subterranean fissure opens in the bedrock at the bottom of the basin. The water drains steadily down into the deep underground aquifers, leaving the surface lakebed completely dry, cracked, and exposed. The fish are stranded in the mud, and the reeds wither under the sun. The lake has no water of its own; its life has drained beneath it.

This is why Kun represents confinement and depletion: the dry mouth, shortened breath, and heavy quiet that appear when familiar resources, exits, and explanations stop working. The reservoir has drained below the visible surface, leaving the outer container exposed and apparently empty. What this harsh condition offers is clarity: once comfort, approval, and spare capacity disappear, whatever remains dependable can no longer hide behind appearances. The trap is frantic resistance. Repeated pleading wastes breath, panic tightens the limits, and bitterness injures the core that must survive them. Time moves slowly here, dry and resistant to force; visible motion returns only after hidden channels refill. Kun therefore favors conservation over display, preserving enough inner continuity to endure the pressure without pretending the drought is already over.

Inner and outer

Inner

Deep exhaustion, powerlessness, and isolation. The feeling that no matter what you do, you cannot move or make people listen. Frustration and quiet despair at being trapped, with no obvious way out. Tired of fighting, tired of trying to convince people, tired of forcing things that will not move. A slow, quiet pull to stop fighting and look inward.

Outer

All paths are blocked. Resources are scarce, support is nowhere to be found, and words carry no weight. People do not trust or listen, efforts to move or change things fail, and fighting back only makes the trap tighter. The position is cut off from support, high and dry, with no solid ground to stand on.

Keys

  • Total BlockageEvery path is blocked. Moving forward does not work, moving backward does not work, trying to go around does not work. There is no obvious way out, no easy fix, no open door.
  • IsolationYou are cut off from support, from people who understand you, from your base. No one listens to what you have to say, no one comes to help, and you feel completely alone in the trap.
  • ExhaustionResources — energy, money, social capital, willpower — are completely drained. You have nothing left to fight with, and every attempt to get out uses up more of the little you have left.
  • Unheard VoiceNo matter what you say or how you say it, people do not believe you or listen to you. Your words carry no weight, even when you are telling the truth. No one trusts what you have to say.
  • CorneredYou are backed into a corner with nowhere to go. There are no good options, no easy wins, no way to avoid the hard truth of the situation. Fighting only makes it worse.
  • Forced Inward TurnWith no external way out, the only place left to look is inside. The trap forces you to stop fighting the outside world and turn your attention inward, to find a way out that does not rely on external things.

The text

The case log, then the six lines. Open a line when you need it.

The case

King Wen’s record of Kun strips worldly authority down to its naked spiritual core. The opening Judgment states that in times of exhaustion, the noble person achieves true success through steadfast alignment without blame, adding a crucial rule: when you speak, no one will believe you.

The line statements trace the complete journey through the crucible: sitting exhausted beneath a bare tree trunk and wandering lost in a dark valley for three years, trapped in the midst of wine and food while sudden royal robes arrive to demand sacrifice, leaning on bare rocks and getting entangled in thorny briers (returning home only to find your spouse gone), arriving slowly in a golden carriage while trapped in a red-sashed official role, having your nose and feet chopped off in severe judicial crisis before achieving ultimate relief through quiet sacrifice, and finally being bound in creeping vines atop dangerous heights—declaring that moving brings regret, yet recognizing that true repentance and decisive action finally break the curse. The insight is ultimate: when trapped, stop talking; character is proved not when you are feasting, but when you are stripped to the bone.

Six lines

BottomWealthButtocks pressed by a tree stump. Entering a dark valley. For three years, not seen.
When moving

Sinking into deep mental paralysis and isolation; sitting in self-pity beneath bare branches for a long cycle.

Catalysts

Sitting exhausted beneath a bare tree trunk, entering a dark valley—wandering alone for three full years without seeing light.

Counsel

Stop the self-pity loop. You are in a slump; sitting on the floor feeling sorry for yourself only lengthens the winter, get up and clean your room.

Take

Represents depleted emergency savings, dry bank accounts, bad debts, or zero liquid reserves.

In personal finances, staring at an empty checking account after job loss. Stop panicking; cut all discretionary expenses and focus strictly on securing basic food and shelter.

SecondParentsHemmed in by wine and food. A scarlet knee-cover is on its way. Favorable for an offering. Marching brings misfortune. No fault.
When moving

Trapped in material indulgence and golden handcuffs; experiencing acute career burnout while surrounded by food and wine.

Catalysts

Trapped in the midst of abundant food and drink—formal official robes arrive unexpectedly, demanding clean, sincere sacrifice.

Counsel

Endure the high-pressure duty. You are well-compensated but spiritually exhausted; fulfill your obligations with integrity and avoid rash departures.

Take

Represents rigid company benefits, restrictive employment contracts, golden handcuffs, or unfulfilling salaried roles.

In career, feeling spiritually dead in a high-paying corporate job that demands sixty hours of soul-crushing meetings. Do not quit without a plan; save every dollar while building your exit.

ThirdOfficerHemmed in by stone, and taking hold of thistles. Entering one's house, one does not see one's wife. Misfortune.
When moving

Relying on unyielding, rigid obstacles for support; picking toxic battles and losing the people who actually care for you.

Catalysts

Leaning on bare stone for support and clutching at thorny briers—entering your own house only to find your partner gone, bringing deep misfortune.

Counsel

Stop leaning on bad habits. You are taking out your workplace frustration on your family; stop pushing away the people who love you.

Take

Represents overwhelming legal liabilities, aggressive creditor demands, toxic family stress, or compounding health fatigue.

In career, taking the blame for a failed project and bringing that anger home to your partner. In personal life, letting financial anxiety ruin your marriage.

FourthOffspringComing slowly. Hemmed in by a metal carriage. Shame. There is an ending.
When moving

The work comes slowly, hemmed in a metal carriage. There is shame in the confinement, and there is an ending.

Catalysts

Arriving slowly in an ornate golden carriage, feeling deeply confined—holding true through the awkwardness brings eventual success.

Counsel

Let the result stay in the slow vehicle. The shame is that your output is cased and delayed; jumping out of the carriage now is how you lose the ending that is still coming.

Take

Represents a project, a deliverable, or a result stuck inside a hard case, slow to arrive, and still due to finish.

The output is confined, not your title. In career, the work sits in a rigid, slow process and the shame is the delay; it does come to an end. In the home, a piece of making or a child's matter moves at a crawl inside hard conditions and still finishes.

FifthBrothersNose cut, feet cut. Hemmed in by the red knee-cover. Then, slowly, release. Favorable for a sacrifice.
When moving

Suffering extreme, humiliating penalties from an unfair system; holding quiet, steadfast dignity until the crisis dissolves.

Catalysts

Having the nose and feet severed in harsh judicial persecution—finding joy and ultimate relief through quiet, pious sacrifice.

Counsel

Do not react to unfair slander. You took a heavy public hit or pay cut; hold your head high, do not sue out of rage, and let time clear your name.

Take

Represents malicious rivals, treacherous former business associates, hostile workplace cliques, or unfair competitors.

In career, being publicly scapegoated by a corrupt executive team. Maintain your silence and do not engage in mudslinging; time and audit trails will fully clear your name.

TopParentsHemmed in by creepers, on a shaky ledge. Moving will bring regret, it says. With that regret, marching brings good fortune.
When moving

Reaching the absolute limit of confinement; recognizing that your self-made mental prison can be broken with one decisive act of will.

Catalysts

Entangled in creeping vines atop a precarious peak, declaring that movement brings regret—achieving true repentance and moving boldly brings supreme fortune.

Counsel

Break the mental loop today. The cage you are in is mostly made of your own fear; make the decision, sign the papers, and walk out into freedom.

Take

Represents breaking free from a long-term toxic contract, finalizing a painful divorce, stepping out of addiction, or mental liberation.

In personal life, finally signing the divorce papers or leaving a toxic apartment, feeling immense relief. In career, resigning from a soul-crushing firm to start over completely clean.
