01

Basic

Meaning, weather, and the five checks. Enough to recognize the hex.

What it means

Bo represents the natural cycle of stripping away and structural decay: the inevitable phase where old foundations crumble, outdated forms disintegrate, and excess is peeled back to the core seed.

The core dynamic is Mountain resting high above Earth. The tall mountain towers into the winter wind, but the soft soil beneath it is eroding, causing rock after rock to slide downward. The foundational wisdom advises generous leaders to fortify those below in order to secure their own home, understanding that a summit cannot stand if the foundation is starved.

The sole opportunity of Bo is saving the essential seed—stripping out dead weight, walking away from doomed investments, and preserving your core health and capital for the next cycle. The fatal risk is stubborn denial: throwing good money after bad, trying to prop up a rotten beam, and getting crushed when the roof inevitably collapses.

The mandate is peaceful surrender of the non-essential. Stop fighting the season. Do not launch new ventures. Let the decaying leaves drop, protect your core seed in silence, and wait for the winter solstice.

The Vibe

Quiet erosion, falling leaves, and the heavy awareness of a structure thinning out from below.

There is no sudden explosion or violent catastrophe here; instead, support is slipping away in slow, manageable increments that everyone notices but nobody knows how to stop. The room feels chilly, exposed, and stripped of spare warmth. Old alliances are disintegrating, budgets are being trimmed to the bone, and holding onto the past feels like trying to grip dry sand. A space where fighting gravity only exhausts you, and letting the dead layers fall is the only way to preserve the living seed.

Cheat Code

Crush
The relationship is thinning out at the foundation. Trust, shared intimacy, and daily effort have eroded over time. Stop pretending things are fine; having an honest, dignified separation preserves your self-respect and prevents an ugly, bitter collapse.
Bag
A department, market sector, or legacy job is being structurally eliminated. Layoffs, budget cuts, and automation are closing the door. Stop fighting the corporate tide; update your resume, protect your severance, and look for emerging industries.
Cash
Severe financial contraction and eroding asset values. Old revenue streams are drying up and speculative holdings are depreciating. Liquidate vulnerable positions, slash personal overhead to the absolute bone, and hold unencumbered cash.
Glow
Deep physical exhaustion, low immune reserves, and hair/skin dryness. Your body has given too much without replenishment. Cancel all unnecessary social demands; spend full weekends sleeping, eating nutrient-rich stews, and resting completely.
Squad
Your social circle is naturally shrinking. Superficial networking contacts and fair-weather friends are vanishing as the season cools. Do not chase them; a quiet room with one loyal friend is infinitely safer than a crowd of takers.

The Vibe

Quiet erosion, falling leaves, and the heavy awareness of a structure thinning out from below.

Core meaning

Bo represents the natural cycle of stripping away and structural decay: the inevitable phase where old foundations crumble, outdated forms disintegrate, and excess is peeled back to the core seed.

Trigram structure

Bo is composed of Earth below and Mountain above. Earth represents deep mass, soil, and receptive gravity. Mountain represents rock, high peaks, and solid stone.

Best stance

Preserving the Seed. Cutting losses cleanly, letting the dead leaves drop, and safeguarding your core health and assets.

Opportunity

The sole opportunity of Bo is saving the essential seed—stripping out dead weight, walking away from doomed investments, and preserving your core health and capital for the next cycle.

Risk

The fatal risk is stubborn denial: throwing good money after bad, trying to prop up a rotten beam, and getting crushed when the roof inevitably collapses.

Five checks

Deep breakdown

Why this pattern behaves as it does — then inner, outer, and keys.

What the pattern is

Bo is composed of Earth below and Mountain above. Earth represents deep mass, soil, and receptive gravity. Mountain represents rock, high peaks, and solid stone.

Picture a towering limestone cliff standing exposed to five centuries of torrential rain and winter freeze. Five broken lines rise from the bottom, representing the soft, damp earth gradually eroding away beneath the cliff. At the very top sits a single solid line—the hard summit stone. As the foundation dissolves, the stone cannot float; it must fall, break apart, and become new soil for the valley below.

This is why Bo represents the stripping away of a structure that can no longer hold. Daily life gives the first bodily warning: support feels thinner, familiar routines stop carrying weight, and each attempt to restore the old shape costs more. Erosion travels from the foundation upward, loosening layer after layer until the essential core stands exposed. That clearing creates one narrow but vital possibility—release dead weight, protect health and resources, and carry the viable seed into the next cycle. Two errors shadow the process. Denial keeps propping up what is already collapsing, while indiscriminate cutting destroys the seed along with the debris. The timing is slow and irreversible at first, then faster near the end. Stability cannot be rushed; it returns only after the falling layers have revealed what can endure and what must become material for renewal.

Inner and outer

Inner

A sense of powerlessness as things once relied on crumble away. Feelings of loss, disappointment, and quiet panic as stability disappears. The sinking feeling of being unable to hold everything together no matter how much effort is put in. A growing awareness that the old way of things is over, whether welcomed or not.

Outer

Structures and systems that once felt solid are breaking down. Hidden problems are coming to the surface, peeling away layer by layer. There is not enough solid foundation left to support the way things used to be. Collapse is happening in plain sight, with no quick fix to stop it. The old order is falling apart.

Keys

  • Layered PeelingBreakdown happens gradually, one piece at a time, not all at once. First the outer layers fall, then the deeper parts go, until the whole structure comes apart. It is slow but steady, and each piece that falls reveals more of the rot underneath.
  • Foundation CollapseThe real problem exists at the base, not the surface. The whole thing falls apart because the foundation was rotten to begin with — surface fixes cannot save it. What looks like a small problem on top is actually a sign the entire base is gone.
  • InevitabilityThis breakdown cannot be stopped or wished away. It is the natural result of what was built on a bad foundation, and it must run its course. Fighting it only wastes energy and makes the final fall worse.
  • Internal RotDamage starts from the inside, not from outside forces. Hidden decay, corruption, or neglect eats away at the structure slowly, until there is not enough solid material left to stand on. The outside looks fine long after the inside is gone.
  • VulnerabilityThere is very little protection left when things are peeling apart. What used to shield is falling away, leaving exposure. It is easy to get hurt in this state, because no solid structure remains to rely on.
  • Cycle EndingThis is the end of a cycle that has run its course. What was built has reached its breaking point, and it is time for it to come down. The old must clear away to make space for something new to grow later.

The text

The case log, then the six lines. Open a line when you need it.

The case

The ancient records of Bo map the progressive decay of a household through the physical dismantling of a sleeping bed. The opening Judgment states plainly that it is unfavorable to advance anywhere, warning that active striving during a collapse only accelerates ruin.

The line statements trace the erosion moving upward from the bottom: stripping the bed at its legs (the foundation crumbles), stripping the bed at its frame (daily support fails), turning against the decay to stay clean, stripping the flesh off the bed (direct personal impact), leading a string of court ladies like fish to secure favor without blame, and finally the supreme image of the entire hexagram: a large fruit left uneaten on the bare branch—the noble person receives a brand new carriage to travel forward, while the petty person’s entire house collapses over their head. The insight is ultimate: when the old world strips away, fools lose their roof, while masters take the uneaten seed and plant the future.

Six lines

BottomParentsStripping the bed at the legs. To slight holding firm brings misfortune.
When moving

The stripping starts at the legs of the bed. Treat that first cut in the foundation lightly, and the misfortune follows.

Catalysts

Stripping the legs of the bed—disregarding this early decay brings destruction and persistent misfortune.

Counsel

Do not sleep on a bed whose legs are already being cut. The house, the lease, the basic post—if the footing of it is peeling, get your weight off before you call it a minor loss.

Take

Represents the bed, the house, the lease, the basic post, or the foundation being stripped from the legs up.

The first loss is structural. In the home, the support under the household starts to come away, and slighting that firmness is the misfortune. In career, the leg of the position—the contract under you—is being peeled, and this is too early to keep your full weight on it.

SecondOfficerStripping the bed at the frame. To slight holding firm brings misfortune.
When moving

Erosion reaches the middle frame; daily operations and working supports begin to break down.

Catalysts

Stripping the bed at its structural frame—ignoring the breakdown ensures direct misfortune.

Counsel

Do not rely on broken tools. Your daily workflow or core vendor is failing; stop making excuses and cut your reliance immediately.

Take

Represents job security, supervisor trust, contractual compliance, or regular monthly obligations.

The middle layer of support is shaking. In career, your company announcing a hiring freeze and project cancellations. In personal life, landlord signaling an unexpected rent hike or lease termination.

ThirdWealthStripping it. No fault.
When moving

You strip the thing off. Letting that spoiled good go is without fault.

Catalysts

Stripping the thing away—letting the spoiled piece go leaves you entirely without fault.

Counsel

Release the rotting asset. The holding, the payment, the match that is already peeling does not need a rescue; walking off it is the blameless move.

Take

Represents a possession, a payment, or a match that is already coming apart, and that you can strip off without blame.

What you leave is a bad good, not a bad crowd. In finances, a holding is peeling and dropping it leaves no fault. In love, a material entanglement is already stripped by the situation, and insisting on keeping the remainder is the only mistake available.

FourthParentsStripping the bed down to the skin. Misfortune.
When moving

The decay touches your personal livelihood; damage has broken through all buffers and hits your core reality.

Catalysts

Stripping the skin of the bed right down to the flesh—immediate, active calamity is present.

Counsel

Enter emergency mode. The buffer is gone; freeze all non-essential outflows, protect your shelter, and focus purely on survival.

Take

Represents primary housing, core employment contracts, family stability, or legal standing.

Crisis touches your immediate roof. In career, receiving a direct layoff notice or contract termination. In personal life, dealing with a sudden property dispute that threatens your living situation.

FifthOffspringA string of fish. Favor, as with the palace women. Nothing is unfavorable.
When moving

What follows you is led in a string, like fish, and receives favor the way the palace women do. Nothing in that ordered care is unfavorable.

Catalysts

Leading palace attendants like a neat string of fish to receive royal favor—everything moves smoothly without blame.

Counsel

Lead the living line out in order. You may not save the old frame, but the work, the dependents, and the favor can still be brought through if you keep them in a string.

Take

Represents the ordered yield, the dependents, the projects that follow you, or the favor that keeps that living line intact.

The fortune is the string you lead, not the cash you extract. In career, you bring the living work out in order and the favor holds. In the home, dependents are guided through as a line, and nothing in that care turns against you.

TopWealthA great fruit, not eaten. The noble one gains a carriage. The small person strips the hut.
When moving

A great fruit is left uneaten, and the noble one receives a carriage. The small person is left stripping a hut.

Catalysts

A huge ripe fruit remains unconsumed on the winter branch—the noble person gains a great carriage, while the petty person’s house falls.

Counsel

Take the fruit and the carriage, and do not go back for the hut. The substantial good survives the collapse; the flimsy shelter is what gets stripped, and it is not your store.

Take

Represents the uneaten fruit, the carriage, the goods that remain, or the substantial match that outlasts a stripped shack.

A real asset is left standing. In finances, you receive a vehicle and a stored result while a flimsier holding is torn down around someone else. In love, the substantial match remains when the temporary arrangement loses its roof.
