01

Basic

Meaning, weather, and the five checks. Enough to recognize the hex.

What it means

Shi represents collective mobilization and operational discipline: the gathering of scattered resources and people under a single, legitimate command to solve a massive challenge.

The core dynamic is Water stored beneath the Earth. Water represents raw, dangerous power; Earth represents the broad collective structure that contains and channels it. The foundational wisdom instructs nourishing the people and organizing the crowd, maintaining fairness, shared supplies, and strict standards so that collective force operates without turning destructive.

The major opportunity is overcoming insurmountable obstacles through unified force—tackling crises that no single person could survive alone. The fatal risk is chaotic command or corrupt leadership: placing inexperienced favorites in charge, dividing authority, or maintaining wartime aggression after the objective is achieved.

The mandate is absolute discipline. Establish a clear hierarchy, appoint proven leadership, enforce strict rules, and mobilize your full resources toward a single defined target.

The Vibe

Iron discipline, quiet coordination, and the unmistakable tension of a large operation mobilizing for action.

The room is stripped of small talk, personal indulgence, and casual opinions. Everything is organized around authority, clear chain of command, and shared mission. The atmosphere carries heavy responsibility: personal preferences are subordinated to the collective goal, mistakes carry immediate operational cost, and leadership cannot afford to show hesitation. A field where moving together as one unit wins, while lone actors get crushed.

Deep breakdown

Why this pattern behaves as it does — then inner, outer, and keys.

What the pattern is

Shi is constructed from Water below and Earth above. Water represents fluid, unstable, and dangerous kinetic force. Earth represents solid mass, ground, discipline, and the multitude of people.

Imagine a massive underground reservoir hidden beneath agricultural land. Left unmanaged, the water seeps chaotically, turning fields into useless bogs or flooding homes. But when engineered with stone dams, canals, and gates, the same reservoir irrigates an entire province, sustaining hundreds of thousands of lives.

This is why Shi represents disciplined mobilization of collective force. In the body, scattered impulses seem to fall into cadence: attention narrows, burdens redistribute, and individual movement joins a larger march. Dangerous water beneath broad earth describes the mechanics; legitimate direction, clear structure, and reliable coordination contain unstable energy until it becomes usable strength. This arrangement can meet a challenge beyond any lone effort by gathering people and resources around one defined purpose. Its reversal produces coercion or chaos: command fragments, untested favorites occupy critical posts, or emergency intensity continues after the objective has passed. The rhythm is heavy and methodical—assemble, organize, advance, assess, then stand down. At every stage, authority must remain accountable to the reason it was granted. Discipline allows many parts to move as one while preventing concentrated power from damaging the very ground it was summoned to protect.

Inner and outer

Inner

Feeling like you're part of something bigger — a team, a cause, a fight. You might feel disciplined, focused, ready for action. There's a sense of mission or purpose that unifies your energy. You might also feel the weight of responsibility — either as a leader or as someone who has to follow orders. There's a seriousness to your mood, a sense that something important is at stake.

Outer

There's organized action happening around you — a team, a movement, a campaign, a conflict between groups. People are uniting under leaders, working toward a common goal. The environment feels strategic and serious, not casual. There might be an opponent or a challenge that requires collective effort to face. Things are moving in a coordinated, purposeful way.

Keys

  • OrganizationPeople coming together in a structured way. Not a mob — a coordinated group with roles, rules, and hierarchy. Order out of chaos.
  • LeadershipA strong, capable leader at the center who directs the group. The quality of the leader determines everything. Good leadership wins; bad leadership loses.
  • DisciplineThe group follows rules and acts as one. Everyone knows their role and does their part. Order and obedience make the group strong.
  • Conflict/WarThe group exists to fight or compete against something. There's an opponent, an enemy, or a challenge that requires collective force to overcome.
  • Collective PowerA group working together is much stronger than any individual. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Unified force can achieve what scattered effort can't.
  • DangerWar and organized conflict are risky. People get hurt, resources get spent, and failure can be catastrophic. There's always a cost to mobilizing an army.

The text

The case log, then the six lines. Open a line when you need it.

The case

King Wen’s record of Shi deals with the high-stakes reality of warfare. The Judgment states that an army requires a seasoned, respected veteran leader and absolute alignment with legitimate purpose to remain blameless.

The line statements provide the tactical rules of engagement: mobilizing strictly under proven rules rather than passion, the general stationed in the center sharing the hardships of the troops, warning against putting incompetent favorites in charge of supply wagons, knowing when to retreat to defensive camp, maintaining field discipline, and finally distributing land and titles to capable commanders while strictly excluding opportunistic petty figures from real power. The lesson is timeless: winning a campaign requires proven competence, and securing the peace requires keeping favorites away from governance.

Six lines

BottomOffspringThe army sets out by discipline. If the discipline is poor, misfortune.
When moving

The very beginning of mobilization; operational rules must be established before the first step.

Catalysts

The army marches out under strict legal discipline—if the rules are flawed, disaster follows immediately.

Counsel

Set the standard before starting. Lay down non-negotiable expectations, metrics, and workflows; starting without rules guarantees failure.

Take

Represents tactical methods, initial project guidelines, operational SOPs, or work habits.

In this opening stage, discipline in execution is your lifeblood. In career, setting strict daily milestones to prevent project drift. In personal life, establishing a rigorous workout and diet routine before taking on a heavy workload.

SecondOfficerIn the center of the army. Good fortune, no fault. The king bestows the charge three times.
When moving

The proven leader commanding from the center; complete alignment between leadership and the ranks.

Catalysts

The general resides in the midst of the army, sharing hardships and receiving royal honors three times.

Counsel

Lead from the front lines. Do not hide in executive offices; being physically present with your team earns absolute loyalty and success.

Take

Represents commanding authority, direct project responsibility, senior management backing, or high-stakes accountability.

Holding the central mandate, your direct leadership settles the room. In career, stepping up as lead manager on a turnaround project and winning total team buy-in. In personal life, taking charge of a complex family crisis with calm authority.

ThirdWealthThe army may be carting corpses. Misfortune.
When moving

Incompetent leadership leading to breakdown; carts carrying dead bodies instead of supplies.

Catalysts

The army suffers a catastrophic defeat because multiple unqualified people tried to command the wagons.

Counsel

Remove weak operators immediately. Someone without real skill is running a critical department; replace them before they crash the mission.

Take

Represents team payroll, supply lines, material resources, or commercial assets mismanaged by inexperienced hands.

Incompetent management burns capital. In career, an inexperienced project lead wasting company budget on vanity software. In finances, losing money by delegating investment decisions to an unqualified friend.

FourthOfficerThe army camps on the left. No fault.
When moving

Recognizing overwhelming odds and executing an orderly retreat to preserve troops.

Catalysts

The army withdraws and camps on the left flank—a strategic retreat without blame.

Counsel

Order an organized retreat. You are outmatched on this field; falling back to a fortified position saves your assets for the real fight.

Take

Represents tactical reorganization, strategic retreat, regulatory audits, or shifting project scope.

Pressure forces a strategic consolidation. In career, moving your launch date back by a month to fix backend bugs. In finances, pausing aggressive investments to build up a larger cash reserve.

FifthBrothersGame in the field. Favorable to take it with a clear word. No fault. The elder son leads the army. A younger son carts corpses. Holding firm brings misfortune.
When moving

Legitimate defense against an active threat; seasoned leadership required to clear the field.

Distributing long-term spoils after a major victory. In career, securing equity and permanent leadership titles after delivering the flagship project, while ensuring toxic politickers receive zero influence.
